I defended my dissertation in April 2024! My dissertation focused on the macroevolutionary dynamics of Todiramphus kingfishers, exploring how island biogeography, genomic divergence, and plumage color evolution have shaped one of the most widespread avian radiations in the Indo-Pacific. This dissertation represents the culmination of years of lab work, museum research, and collaboration, but it's also just the beginning. I'm excited to carry these ideas forward as I continue building my research program.
Breaking down what actually happens during an oral defense gives a really reassuring reality check for postgrads facing that final panel. Preparing to justify your methodology under questioning is often far more nerve-wracking than writing the thesis itself. A colleague in my department was actually consulting a dissertation writing service last semester to get advice on structuring her presentation slides and anticipating tough questions from examiners. It really goes to show that clear communication and staying calm under pressure are just as important as the research itself.
