Data to Design workshop at AOS 2026

Over the course of the last two years, I've begun organizing workshops on how to use Adobe Illustrator to improve scientific graphics. Earlier this year, I co-led two workshops with one of my NSF co-sponsors, Dr. Stepfanie Aguillon (UCLA) for undergraduate and graduate students at UCLA and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. This year at AOS, I had the wonderful opportunity to do so again with fellow Aguillon lab postdoc Dr. Devon DeRaad and Emily Griffith, who is doing her PhD at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University.

The morning session introduced R and ggplot2 to students and the afternoon section discussed best practices for effective scientific graphics, how to create beautiful categorical color palettes, and practical editings skills to Adobe Illustrator and Graphite. I also recorded a new YouTube video as a future reference for workshop attendees or for those that could not attend.
